Desyrel (trazodone) is an antidepressant that antagonizes serotonin (5-hydroxytryptophan) receptors, inhibits serotonin reuptake by synaptosomes in the brain, and is considered a multifunctional psychopharmaceutical due to its unique receptor interactions.
Desyrel is most commonly indicated in the treatment of depression. Its effectiveness in the treatment of depressive conditions in elderly people (in contrast to agomelatine) has been documented.
This drug is also widely used as a substitute for benzodiazepines or hypnotics like benzodiazepines due to its anxiolytic and hypnotic effects seen in patients with depression. Data obtained from official sources confirm its effectiveness in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder, chronic pain syndrome, as well as when it is used as an anxiolytic agent in cases of alcohol or benzodiazepine dependence.
Trazodone is a fairly safe drug compared to others, including the most modern antidepressants. It should also be noted its ability to maintain libido and not cause weight gain in patients. It is highly probable that the promotion of Desyrel will contribute to a decrease in the frequency of benzodiazepine use for the treatment of anxiety-depressive states, which is currently unreasonably observed.
